Cherry "Peak" Ski Resort
It's Alive
Thursday, February 2, 2012 the Cache Valley Planning Commission voted to approve the proposal.
There are still several hurdles that remain such as water rights and permits to drill a well; an avalanche plan that avoids impacting the wilderness, and a utility right-of-way battle with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Volunteer Captures Video
Illegal use in Providence Canyon
A BRWC volunteer captured this video of motorcyclists off-route and behind a closure barrier in Providence Canyon. We're offering a $350 reward to anyone providing information to the identity of these individuals.
UPDATE: We have had a response to our recently posted reward for the motorcycles that were traveling illegally off route and captured on video. One of the individuals has been identified and the evidence turned over to the Logan Ranger District's Law Enforcement Officer. The informant has declined the reward asking we use it for conservation measures.

Riding off-route is illegal and when wet is especially damaging to the landscape. This image shows an area where the individuals from the video illegally drove through the forest.

LRD Builds Inventory of Unauthorized Use
The Logan Ranger District has spent the past two summers working on an inventory of unauthorized routes and trails on the district. BRWC has acquired the GIS data through the Freedom of Information Act and plans to produce a web-based site so the public can access the data.
See the maps here: Bear River Range; Wellsville Mtns; and an Inventory Brief
The preliminary data shows 314 miles of unauthorized routes, which include cow, horse, and hiking trails. The LRD plans to refine their data in the next several months and predicts the unauthorized or illegal motorized route mileage should be around 60–70 miles.
But after an early analysis of our Motorized Use Data Project (MUD) data, we found that volunteers walked 130 miles of the LRD’s 321.43 miles of authorized roads and discovered 30 miles of unauthorized routes. Extrapolating for the entire district, Project MUD’s figures indicated a troubling 100 miles of unauthorized routes. BRWC believes that 100 miles was a conservative estimate.
We patiently await the LRD’s final analysis and will inform you of the results. Please stay tuned.

The abuse is extensive and irresponsible causing impacts to the watershed and winter wildlife habitat. This is a pioneered and illegal route (hillclimb).
