Hyde Park Canyon
Unauthorized Wilderness Route Restoration Project

This project is in coordination with the Wasatch-Cache National Forest's Logan Ranger District and funded by a grant from National Forest Foundation & REI. If you would like to contribute please contact us at: dmiller@brwcouncil.org

We Made A Difference! THANK YOU!

On April 21 and after a slow start, the Bear River Watershed Council in conjunction with the Logan Ranger District and thirty-six volunteers put an end to off-road vehicle trespass in the Mount Naomi Wilderness.

Volunteers cut channels to divert run-off from several illegal user created routes, reseeded damaged areas and placed barriers at the mouth of Hyde Park and Dry Hollow canyons and Cedar Ridge above Hyde Park in Cache County.

BRWC wants to thank all those who came out in the chilly weather and preformed some of the backbreaking tasks.(See more photos}

On May 19, we finished building the two buck and pole barrier fences on Cedar Ridge. .(See more photos}

THE PROJECT will accomplish the following objectives: 1) Complete restoration, by reseeding, of an unauthorized route extending into the Mt. Naomi Wilderness; 2) Construction of a vehicle barrier to stop illegal travel; 2) Curtail weed dispersal such as Dyers Woad, Leafy Spurge and Houndstongue; 3) Stop erosion by placing appropriate erosion-control barriers in strategic locations; and 4) Bring public attention to these issues currently impacting the Mt. Naomi Wilderness.

HYDE PARK CANYON RIDGE climbs a steep grade into the Mount Naomi Wilderness causing erosion and dispersal of weeds. Users have run over the steel poles and ignored the wilderness sign.

HYDE PARK CANYON RIDGE

The Logan Ranger District and BRWC will build a vehicle barrier to close this unauthorized route. Water bars to control erosion will be placed including a reseeding effort to restore the hillside's natural state.

HYDE PARK CANYON unauthorized access into the Mt. Naomi Wilderness pushes up .5 mile up the canyon with three dispersed camping areas, one hill climb, and 5' deep eroded gullies. The wilderness sign had been cut down and tossed in the vegetation.

The Logan Ranger District and BRWC will build a vehicle barrier to close this unauthorized route.
