Garden City

Swan Peak Illegal Route #1 / Data from 2003.
This illegal route begins on the Swan Flat road near the head of Garden City Canyon and continues into the Bear Lake Valley. This illegal route has major problems.   Rutting and erosion are serious as are the high volume of user violations. The first set of photos are aerials that are depicted on the map as red rectangles.

WE RECOMMEND:
More rock barriers. Posting more signs including information about fines for violations. Working with Rich County and Garden City officials for solutions on the east side of the forest.

Amazon Hollow Illegal Route.
The beginning of this illegal route is being managed as "open" by the Forest Service to several severely impacted dispersed camping sites. The route loops around with motorized shortcutting trails connecting the loop. The route down Amazon Hollow is signed "closed" with two very small rocks designating the closure. Older tracks from this season are evident. The illegal route continues down the hollow and doubles back up a very steep hill back to this point.

WE RECOMMEND:
We're not sure why the FS is ignoring their own travel plan by allowing the first section to be open to dispersed camping. The camping is approximately 3/4 miles from the highway not 150 feet. At minimum, "dead end" signs need to be posted at the beginning of the route and the loop beyond the dispersed camping should be closed. We strongly suggest closing the area due to the current impacts.

RT #240 Richardson Fork
Several illegal routes fork from this route with no signs or barriers. Of special concern is illegal route #2 (images 40.jpg - 33.jpg) to Cheney Spring.

WE RECOMMEND:
ASAP installing barriers and signs closing illegal routes. Most importantly illegal route #2 to Cheney Spring.
